Science And Wisdom

Feb 16, 2022 by James A. Cusumano

Science has taken quite a beating from many politicians and the general public over the last couple of decades. It’s true that there have been some incompetent scientists throughout time who have put false truths and ideas before us. But I believe the largest number of scientists—the ones who wanted to put a positive dent in our world and the cosmos—have done so with wisdom and sincerity. It is they who have made our lives safer, easier, and many times, more fulfilling.

While it is true that we can point to discoveries that have made our life much more challenging—e.g., nuclear energy—maybe it’s not the discovery itself, but how we have chosen to use it? After all nuclear energy has not only been responsible for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It has been used to cure cancer in millions of patients and has a host of other humanly-valuable uses.

And as for vaccination, where would the world be today if science had not discovered vaccines to tame the tragic outcomes of polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox?

In that respect, I think it worth contemplating world famous sci-fi novelist, Isaac Asimov’s comment.

“The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.”

Enjoy your journey! Make a difference!
